The nursing education in Shandong University began in 1914 when the Medical School of Cheeloo University started the four-year nursing program. This nursing major experienced restructure and other changes in history and made great contributions to national nursing education. In 1984 the former Shandong Medical University, which can be traced back to the initial medical School of Cheeloo University, was approved by the Ministry of Education to launch the bachelor nursing program as one of first resumed advanced nursing schools in mainland China. In June 2000 the nursing department of Shandong Medical University merged with the university affiliated secondary nursing school, and then in July the same year the Shandong Medical University merged with the former Shandong University and Shandong Polytechnic University to formulate the present/new Shandong University. Meantime the nursing department was renamed as the School of Nursing, Shandong University.

The nursing school is one of the first group of authorized sites to start professional master program and scientific doctoral program, while in 2012 approved to have postdoctoral fellows. Currently it is one of two World Health Organization Collaborating Centers in mainland China, and becomes a complete system to operate bachelor, master, doctoral and postdoctoral programs.

The nursing school has the first-class of faculty and laboratory facilities, constituted by five teaching divisions ¨C Nursing Basics, Clinical Nursing, Community Nursing, Nursing Psychology and Nursing Education - and one Laboratory Centre. In total there are 47 faculty of whom 19 are professors and all young or middle-aged have at least half a year experience overseas. As the national Feature Specialty and provincial Brand Specialty, the nursing major has a provincial key discipline area, two national model courses and sharable model resourcing courses within the first batch of recognition. The nursing school has developed stable and substantive collaboration with more than 10 high-level nursing schools overseas from over 10 countries or areas such as U.S., Japan, Australia, Sweden, Korea and Hong Kong. Such strong international connections can provide opportunities for students to study or work overseas.

The nursing school makes full use of what is learned about advanced nursing education from first-class universities worldly to develop the high-quality characteristic curricula and teaching modalities taking the Chinese context into consideration. It fulfills the university strength in humanity and history disciplines to nurture students to develop general attributes, creative competency, enrich selective courses, and expand rooms for self-choices to achieve individualized education. To achieve the educational goal to foster ¡®nursing leaders to lead in the future¡¯, small classes and elite attributes growth are always promoted and highlighted to focus attention to the sustainable development and quality employment. Nursing students¡¯ quality are so widely well-recognized to a great deal in the society that the employment rate maintains 100% for all levels of graduates.
